Read the official ORNL advertisement before you apply.

The work

The role leads research on nuclear fuel cycle materials, with a focus on solid materials in the uranium fuel cycle. The central question is how processing affects a material’s chemical and physical observables, and how that understanding translates into nuclear forensics.

Nuclear forensics reads a sample backwards: given a piece of material, what process made it, and where. That only works if the link between processing history and measurable signature is understood properly, which is the science this post does.

The Materials and Chemistry Group works on the fundamental chemistry and physics of nuclear fuel cycle materials for national security. Its expertise covers nuclear materials synthesis and analysis, crystallography, imaging, spectroscopy, physical property analysis, neutron scattering and computational chemistry.

What you need

  • A PhD in chemistry, materials science, nuclear engineering or a related field
  • Experience with actinide or nuclear materials chemistry, and with solid-state characterisation
  • Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications

Pay and conditions

ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.

How to apply

Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 17043. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application

  • Actinide handling experience is the differentiator. Say what you have worked with and under what controls.
  • This sits in National Security Sciences. Expect citizenship and clearance conditions; read the posting.
  • Quote the requisition ID, 17043. ORNL tracks applications by it.
  • Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
