At a glance
- Position: Project Research Scientist I (Non-Medical), 01 vacancy
- Where: Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras, Chennai
- Pay: Rs 56,000 a month plus House Rent Allowance as admissible
- Duration: Initially one year, extendable up to three years or the project duration, based on performance

The coordinator is Prof. Kavitha Arunachalam of the Department of Engineering Design. The advertisement is dated 18 September 2026. It is one of a set of Project Research Scientist posts advertised on the same project, alongside a medical post and a second non-medical post with a different disciplinary focus.
What the hyperthermia device work involves
- Contributing to hyperthermia device development and engineering optimisation
- Clinical device development work within the project
- Device testing in the laboratory to establish safety as per standards
- Supporting the clinical study
Why this role matters
A hyperthermia applicator has to deliver a controlled thermal dose into tissue and be safe enough to put in front of an ethics committee. That is a thermal and structural design problem before it is a clinical one, and it is the kind of work that usually happens inside a medical device company rather than where a young engineer can reach it. Here the same person takes the design through optimisation, bench safety testing against standards, and into a clinical study — the whole arc, on one project, with a named academic lead.
Eligibility
- A first class postgraduate degree, including integrated postgraduate degrees; or a second class postgraduate degree, including integrated PG degrees, with a PhD
- Maximum age limit 35 years
- The job description asks for an undergraduate degree in mechanical, aerospace, design or industrial design engineering with a postgraduate specialisation in thermal, product design, fluid-structure interaction, industrial design or manufacturing
The post is on a purely contract basis and confers no right to extension, regularisation or permanency at the Institute.
Pay and duration
- Rs 56,000 a month plus House Rent Allowance as admissible
- Initially one year, extendable up to three years or the duration of the project, based on performance
- One vacancy

How to prepare for this application
- Lead with a device you designed rather than a course project: the CAD model, the thermal or structural analysis behind it, and what changed after you tested it
- Be specific about the CAD and simulation tools you use daily, and about any coupled thermal-fluid or fluid-structure work you have done
- Read up on the safety standards that apply to electromedical equipment; the advertisement names testing to standards as part of the job, and knowing the vocabulary will set you apart
- If you have worked with clinicians before, say so — this project runs a device design team next to a clinical study, and that interface is where projects usually stall
- Check whether you meet the first class postgraduate requirement exactly as worded, and note the age limit of 35 years
