Job Description

IIT Delhi has two Project Scientist posts in computer vision for small object detection. They are in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, New Delhi. Larsen & Toubro Precision Engineering & Systems, Mumbai, funds the project.

At a glance

  • Posts: Project Scientist (2)
  • Where: Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Delhi, New Delhi
  • Pay: ₹47,790 to ₹62,350 a month (a ten-step slab), plus HRA at 30%
  • Duration: Contractual, renewed yearly, up to the end of the project (4 January 2028)
  • Apply by: 21 October 2026, 5:00 pm, by email

The advertisement is IITD/IRD/266/2026, dated 6 October 2026. The project is “Small Object Detection” (RM00089N). The Principal Investigator is Prof. Chetan Arora of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. A separate advertisement from the same group covers semantic segmentation.

What the small object detection Project Scientists work on

  • Deep learning methods to detect small objects in images, the task named in the project title
  • Work with deep neural networks for visual recognition, such as image classification, object detection and segmentation
  • Work under the PI in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering

The advertisement gives the project title and the skills it wants. It does not list day-to-day duties.

Why this role matters

Small objects are one of the hardest cases in computer vision. A target may cover only a few pixels, and standard detectors lose it as they shrink the image. Better small-object detection matters for inspection, surveillance and aerial imaging. Two posts are open, so your odds are better than for a single post.

Eligibility

  • A BTech or BE in CSE, Electronics or Mechanical, with first class or equivalent
  • 2 years of relevant work experience in the field
  • Desirable: solid theory and hands-on skill in modern machine learning and deep learning, and experience with deep networks for image classification, object detection or semantic segmentation
  • SC/ST candidates may get a 5% relaxation in marks

Only Indian nationals may apply. IIT Delhi may set higher criteria for shortlisting. Shortlisted names go up on the IRD website with the online interview details. Only shortlisted candidates are told about the interview. A retired government employee’s pay would be fixed under IRD norms.

Pay and duration

  • ₹47,790 to ₹62,350 a month (a ten-step slab), plus HRA at 30%
  • Contract renewable yearly, or until the project ends on 4 January 2028, whichever is earlier

How to apply

Download Form No. IRD/REC-4 from the IIT Delhi IRD recruitment page. Fill it in with your marks or division and your work experience. Email it to the PI, Prof. Chetan Arora, at the address given in the advertisement. Put the advertisement number, IITD/IRD/266/2026, in the subject line.

Key dates

  • Advertisement dated 6 October 2026

How to prepare for this application

  • Use Form IRD/REC-4 as issued and put the advertisement number in the email subject
  • Show your 2 years of work experience clearly, with dates, employer and what you built
  • Link a GitHub repository with a vision model you trained yourself, with a short README on the results
  • Revise the basics: CNNs and vision transformers, loss functions, data augmentation and evaluation metrics such as mAP and IoU
  • Read up on why small objects are hard for detectors (few pixels, feature-map downsampling) and common fixes such as feature pyramids and tiling
