Job Description
Uppsala University’s Division of Applied Nuclear Physics is hiring a researcher in nuclear safeguards, the technical work that makes sure nuclear material is not used in unauthorised ways. The group works on verifying spent fuel from today’s reactors, including non-regular fuels, and on safeguards for light-water small modular reactors within the ANItA competence centre. The researcher would also have a natural role in growing work on maritime nuclear power and Generation IV systems such as molten salt reactors.

About the nuclear safeguards researcher role
- Model source terms, radiation transport and detection, and analyse gamma and neutron radiation from nuclear fuel
- Fuel characterisation and analysis, and analysis of proliferation risks in existing and future systems, on land and at sea
- Apply for research funding and contribute to the group’s applications
- Possible measurements and analysis of measurement data
- Teaching at undergraduate, master’s and commissioned-education level, and supervising students
What Uppsala University is looking for
- A PhD in physics, specialising in nuclear physics or nuclear engineering
- Excellent spoken and written English for communicating research
- Excellent ability to work in small and large groups
Nice to have
- Strong knowledge of nuclear safeguards and non-proliferation for LWRs, SMRs and Generation IV systems
- Modelling irradiated fuel with codes such as Serpent and MCNP
- Data analysis in Python, and programming in MATLAB, C/C++ and SCALE
- Experience with radiation detectors and national or international collaborations
Pay and location
Uppsala sets the salary individually; the advert gives no figure. The contract is 12 months, full time, starting in January 2027 or as agreed.
