Job Description

A*STAR IME’s Silicon Photonics Department is hiring a Scientist in photonic computing to help build photonic hardware that accelerates AI. The role covers photonic integration, device and circuit design, multi-channel optical and electro-optic test platforms, packaging and checking that target algorithms actually run on the hardware. It involves both industrial and academic projects.

At a glance

  • Post: Scientist, Photonic Computing, IME (req. 2882)
  • Department: Silicon Photonics
  • Posted: 14 July 2026
  • Apply: open until filled (re-checked 14 October 2026)

What the post involves

  • Develop integration flows for new photonic devices and circuits
  • Design photonic devices and circuits for computing hardware
  • Build multi-channel optical and electro-optic test platforms with high-speed control and packaging
  • Verify that target algorithms run correctly on photonic hardware, and publish results

Why this post matters

Photonic computing uses light to do the matrix maths behind AI with less energy than electronics. It is still early, which makes hardware scientists who can design, build and test real chips rare, and IME’s fabs make it one of the few places to do this at scale. The role mixes design, testing and system work.

What A*STAR is looking for

  • A Ph.D. in integrated photonics, microelectronics, optoelectronics, physics or equivalent
  • Strong hands-on photonic device and system simulation
  • Experience testing photonic circuits

Nice to have

  • Experience with electro-optic integration or packaging

Pay and location

A*STAR does not state a salary in this advertisement; research staff pay in Singapore follows the institution’s own scales and depends on qualifications and experience.

How to apply

Apply through the official A*STAR job posting. A*STAR’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 14 October 2026. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application

  • Chips you tested: photonic circuits you designed and measured.
  • Multi-channel test: automation and control experience helps.
  • Algorithms on hardware: any end-to-end demo stands out.
  • Industry exposure: the role spans industrial projects.
