Job Description

Nu Quantum is hiring a Senior AMO Physicist to help build its quantum-network demonstrator. You will work where atomic physics, cavity QED and quantum engineering meet, integrating Nu Quantum’s qubit–photon interface and cavity micro-technology with ion-trapping devices and pushing towards state-of-the-art networking rates and fidelities. It is a hands-on, cross-functional role where you shape experimental design and mentor other physicists.

At a glance

  • Role: Senior AMO Physicist
  • Location: Cambridge, UK (on site)
  • Contract: Full time, permanent; visa sponsorship available
  • Focus: Remote entanglement with integrated micro-cavities
  • Posted: 27 October 2025 (still listed)
  • Apply: open until filled (re-checked 14 October 2026)

What you will do

  • Design and run remote-entanglement experiments with ion-trapping devices and Nu Quantum’s integrated micro-cavities
  • Mentor and support AMO physicists
  • Develop and troubleshoot laser set-ups, RF/DC electronics, control systems and ultra-high-vacuum hardware
  • Collaborate with software, optical, mechanical and electrical engineers and with theory teams
  • Communicate results and priorities clearly, keep lab practice safe and documented, and improve automation and scalability

What Nu Quantum is looking for

  • Experience in experimental AMO physics, preferably ion trapping, or a related discipline
  • Hands-on quantum control of qubits with optical fields, gate optimisation and benchmarking
  • A deep understanding of qubit control, atomic physics and atom–phonon interactions
  • Hands-on design and integration of optical, electronic and UHV systems
  • Expertise in at least two of: laser locking, system automation and real-time control (e.g. ARTIQ)
  • A system-level mindset, strong collaboration, and willingness to mentor

Nice to have

  • Technical leadership on complex, fast-paced projects
  • Contributions to proposals or roadmaps
  • A record of papers and talks

Pay and location

Nu Quantum’s posting does not state a salary. Its listed benefits include flexible working, 28 days’ annual leave (including a 3-day company shutdown) plus UK bank holidays, private medical and dental cover, an on-site gym, a cycle scheme and enhanced paid family leave.

How to apply

Apply through the official Nu Quantum job posting. Nu Quantum’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 14 October 2026. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application

  • Prepare a clear account of an ion-trap experiment you built, including vacuum, lasers and control.
  • Read about cavity-enhanced ion–photon interfaces and what limits their efficiency.
  • Show automation or control code you wrote.
  • Explain how you would benchmark a remote-entanglement link.

About Nu Quantum

Nu Quantum is a Cambridge, UK, quantum networking company founded to commercialise a decade of research from the University of Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory. It builds quantum photonic hardware, including qubit–photon interfaces (QPI), quantum networking units (QNU) and cavity systems, to link quantum computers into scalable networks, and runs trapped-ion and neutral-atom testbeds to prove it.
