Job Description

BRIC-CDFD Hyderabad is hiring a Senior Research Fellow in sugarcane genomics and bioinformatics. You will analyse plant genome data to build a genome-wide SNP array for sugarcane. Pay is Rs 42,000 a month plus 30% HRA. Selection is by walk-in interview on 22 October 2026.

At a glance

  • Position: Senior Research Fellow (SRF), 1 post, project code BRIC-CDFD/P-329/SRF/1
  • Where: BRIC-CDFD, Uppal, Hyderabad
  • Pay: Rs 42,000 a month (consolidated) + 30% HRA
  • Duration: 6 months at first, extendable with the project
  • Age limit: 35 years
  • Walk-in: 22 October 2026, 10:00 a.m.

The project is “Development and validation of a high-throughput genome-wide SNP array for Sugarcane (Saccharum spp)”, funded by the Department of Biotechnology. The supervisor is Dr Ajay Kumar Mahato, a staff scientist at CDFD.

What the sugarcane genomics SRF at CDFD will do

  • Run quality control, read mapping and SNP and indel discovery on plant NGS and whole-genome resequencing data
  • Filter and annotate variants with standard tools such as FastQC or Fastp, BWA-MEM, SAMtools, BCFtools, GATK, FreeBayes and SnpEff or VEP
  • Study genetic diversity, PCA, linkage disequilibrium and population structure in a complex polyploid genome
  • Help choose and validate SNPs for a high-throughput genotyping array

Why this role matters

India grows sugarcane on a large scale, but its genome is huge and highly polyploid. A good SNP array lets breeders genotype many plants fast and cheaply. That speeds up the breeding of better varieties.

Eligibility

  • Essential: a master’s degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, biotechnology, life sciences, genomics, computer science or an allied subject, as per DST/DBT/ICMR norms for SRF, and two years of work experience. (The ad spells the first subject “Bioinfomatics”.)
  • Desirable: bioinformatics analysis of NGS and whole-genome resequencing data from plant genomes
  • Desirable: plant and population genomics, including complex or polyploid genomes
  • Desirable: Linux or Unix, HPC systems, and workflow tools such as Snakemake or Nextflow
  • Age: up to 35 years, with relaxation as per Government of India rules

The posts are open to Indian nationals only. Each post is purely temporary, for six months at first, and may be extended or ended with the project. Age relaxation for SC, ST, OBC, PH, ex-service and women candidates follows Government of India rules. Selected candidates may be empanelled for one year. The ad says selection does not make master’s degree holders eligible to register for a PhD.

Pay and duration

  • Rs 42,000 a month (consolidated) plus 30% HRA
  • Six months at first; it may be extended or ended depending on the project

How to apply

Attend the walk-in interview at BRIC-CDFD, Inner Ring Road, Uppal, Hyderabad 500039 on 22 October 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Bring the filled application form (it is at the end of the ad PDF). Also bring originals and self-attested copies of your ID proof, proof of age, all certificates from Class 10 onwards, experience certificates, and any disability or reservation certificate. Only candidates who meet the essential qualifications will be interviewed. No TA/DA is paid. The ad is listed on the CDFD careers page.

  • Walk-in interview: 22 October 2026, 10:00 a.m., BRIC-CDFD Hyderabad

Please read the official CDFD advertisement (PDF) before applying, and browse more Senior Research Fellow jobs on ResearchJobs.in.

How to prepare for this application

  • Bring proof of two years' work. The SRF post needs it. Carry signed experience certificates.
  • Know your variant-calling pipeline. Be ready to explain each step from raw reads to filtered SNPs.
  • Read up on polyploid genomes. Sugarcane is highly polyploid. Know why that makes SNP calling harder.
  • Show a population genetics result. A PCA or structure plot from your own work is a strong talking point.
  • Fill the form before you travel. The application form is at the end of the ad PDF. Print it and complete it.
