Job Description

IIT Roorkee’s International Centre of Excellence for Dams (ICED) is also hiring two Project Fellows for dam engineering and assessment on the same Central Water Commission (CWC) project led by Prof. M.L. Sharma. These posts ask for more experience than the Research Associate posts and pay more; one is structural and one geotechnical.

India has thousands of large dams, many of them decades old, and keeping them safe depends on regular assessment. Numerical models let engineers check how a dam, its foundation and the reservoir behave under earthquakes, ageing and other loads, and help decide where repairs or monitoring are needed.

About the two project fellow posts

  • Structural post: numerical modelling of gravity dams, power houses and intake structures; automating data extraction and post-processing with Python; detailed technical reports, design validations and field visits
  • Geotechnical post: numerical modelling of soil and rock masses for embankment dam stability; deconvolution of ground motions; geotechnical investigations and stability analysis of dams; report preparation and field visits

Eligibility

  • Structural post: M.Tech in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or Dam Safety and Rehabilitation (or equivalent) plus 3 years of experience, or a Ph.D. in a relevant field with 2 years of experience after the Ph.D., preferably from NITs, IITs, IISc or higher institutes. Desirable: Abaqus, Ansys or LS-Dyna; Python; dam-reservoir-foundation interaction; AAR; user-defined subroutines
  • Geotechnical post: M.Tech in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Dam Safety and Rehabilitation (or equivalent) plus 3 years of experience, or a Ph.D. in a relevant field with 2 years of post-Ph.D. experience, preferably from NITs, IITs, IISc or higher institutes. Desirable: Plaxis 2D/3D, GeoStudio, RS2; Python; ground-motion deconvolution; constitutive models such as HSS, PM4Sand and UBC Sand

All candidates must have excellent academic performance and must be GATE qualified; the notice says essential qualifications may be relaxed in exceptional cases. Open to Indian nationals only. Among equally qualified candidates, SC/ST candidates will be preferred. No TA/DA is paid for attending the interview.

How to prepare for this application

  • Show your experience: prepare two dam or heavy-structure projects you worked on, what you modelled and what decision it informed.
  • Validation: be ready to explain how you checked a numerical model against field data or design standards.
  • Geotechnical depth: for the embankment post, revise slope stability under seismic loading and constitutive model calibration.
  • Structural depth: for the gravity dam post, revise stress analysis, cracking and ageing effects such as AAR.
  • Field readiness: the posts include site visits, so mention any field investigations you have handled.
