Job Description

Isomorphic Labs is hiring a Research Engineer for LLM performance in London, joining the model performance and scaling team to implement and speed up large-language-model post-training and inference on frontier models used in drug design.

At a glance

  • Role: Research Engineer (LLM Performance)
  • Where: London, United Kingdom
  • Team: Model performance and scaling
  • Focus: large-scale LLM post-training, distributed training and inference efficiency
  • Apply: open until filled (re-checked 12 October 2026)

About the LLM performance role

  • Implement and optimise LLM post-training methods at scale on frontier models
  • Work with research teams to turn new methods into production-ready systems
  • Evaluate and deploy frameworks for supervised fine-tuning, reinforcement learning and LLM evaluation
  • Diagnose and fix performance bottlenecks and communication overhead in distributed training and inference
  • Deploy low-precision methods that balance performance with accuracy in real drug design programmes

Isomorphic’s drug design engine combines AI models that predict how molecules and proteins interact with models that generate new candidate molecules. Engineering and research roles there sit close to real drug discovery programmes, so model quality and speed translate directly into scientific decisions.

What Isomorphic Labs is looking for

  • Significant experience with large-scale distributed training of LLMs
  • Experience with JAX or PyTorch
  • Knowledge of parallelism strategies and collective communication libraries such as NCCL
  • A good understanding of GPU architectures; the posting says reasoning about performance matters more than writing kernels from scratch
  • Excellent collaboration skills

Nice to have

  • General LLM serving stacks
  • XLA, Triton, Pallas, CUDA or similar accelerator languages and compilers
  • Optimising accuracy with low-precision formats
  • Building and running production systems on GCP
  • Interest in chemistry and biology

Pay and location

Isomorphic Labs’ posting does not state a salary. The role is based in London.

How to apply

How to prepare for this application

  • Parallelism: be fluent in data, tensor, pipeline and sequence parallelism and when each helps.
  • Profiling: prepare a story of finding and fixing a communication or memory bottleneck.
  • Post-training: know the mechanics of SFT and RL fine-tuning at scale, including evaluation.
  • Low precision: discuss FP8 or INT8 trade-offs and how you check accuracy is preserved.
  • Science interest: a short reading on AI in drug discovery will help you connect performance work to impact.

About Isomorphic Labs

Isomorphic Labs was launched in 2021 to advance human health by building on and beyond the Nobel-winning AlphaFold system. Its interdisciplinary team of drug discovery experts and machine learning specialists builds predictive and generative AI models for drug design, across many therapeutic areas and drug types, with the long-term ambition of helping to solve disease.
