Job Description

Shell is hiring a Computational Data Science Researcher at Shell Technology Centre Bangalore for its Chemometrics and Digital Chemistry team, to build statistical, chemometric and physics- and chemistry-informed AI models that turn chemical and process data into insight for gas, downstream and renewable energy businesses.

At a glance

  • Role: Computational Data Science Researcher (the description calls the role Computational Chemometrician)
  • Team: Chemometrics and Digital Chemistry, Projects and Technology
  • Location: Shell Technology Centre, Bangalore
  • Level: Experienced professionals; PhD required
  • Requisition: R202800
  • Apply: open until filled (re-checked 12 October 2026)

What you will do

  • Design and implement chemometric and hybrid models, including latent-variable methods, Bayesian learning, physics- and chemistry-informed ML, spectral and chromatographic modelling, and uncertainty quantification
  • Choose the right approach, from classical chemometrics to modern AI and mechanistic models, balancing interpretability, robustness and accuracy
  • Work with chemists and process engineers to turn physicochemical behaviour into analytical problems
  • Build robust, deployable models for noisy, sparse and biased data, including real-time use
  • Validate models against experimental, simulated and operational data, and support process monitoring, root-cause analysis, optimisation and scale-up
  • Publish research, develop intellectual property and share knowledge across the organisation

Chemometrics applies statistics and machine learning to chemical measurements such as spectroscopy and chromatography. The posting says the team’s work supports Integrated Gas (LNG and GTL), Downstream, and Renewables and Energy Solutions, including low-carbon products and CO2 abatement.

What Shell is looking for

  • A PhD in applied statistics, data science, chemometrics, mathematics or engineering, with experience in large-scale parameterisation and process data modelling and optimisation
  • Proven experience in deterministic and stochastic optimisation
  • Experience with chromatography and spectroscopy data and multivariate statistical methods
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • A track record of business impact through R&D or consultancy projects
  • Publications in chemometrics, applied statistics or AI for process data

Nice to have

  • Strong AI experience such as reinforcement learning, GANs, meta-learning, active learning or generative AI applied to industrial processes
  • Design of experiments, general linear models, multivariate analysis and time-series analysis
  • Scientific computing and cloud platforms

Pay and location

Shell’s posting does not state a salary. The role is based in Shell Technology Centre, Bangalore.
