Two PhD Positions in Cell and Molecular Biology at KTH and SciLifeLab (AICell Lab)

Job Description

The AICell Lab in KTH’s Department of Applied Physics and Science for Life Laboratory, led by Wei Ouyang, is opening two biology-focused doctoral positions in biological physics. The lab combines wet-lab cell biology with automated experimental platforms and AI-driven analysis. Each project will be shaped with the student at the start around their interests, and students run the biology while collaborating with colleagues in automation, computation and AI.

About the cell biology PhDs

• Design and run cell biology experiments: cell culture, perturbation studies, microscopy and molecular biology methods
• Interpret results biologically and drive the scientific questions
• Collaborate with colleagues working on automation, computation and AI-driven analysis
• Contribute to publications in cell and molecular biology

What to include in your application

KTH asks for certified copies of diplomas, grades and English language certificates (with translations if needed), a CV, a letter of at most two pages on why you want to do research and how it links to your studies and goals, and representative publications or technical reports, and your GitHub or GitLab ID. Applications must arrive by midnight CET/CEST on the closing date.

How KTH doctoral employment works

Only applicants admitted to doctoral studies can be employed as doctoral students. The first contract is for up to one year and is then renewed for up to two years at a time, adding up to at most four years of full-time study. Up to 20% of working time may go to tasks such as teaching and administration. Applicants need English at the level of Swedish upper-secondary English B/6.

What KTH is looking for

• A degree in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, biomedicine, biophysics or a close life-science field
• English equivalent to English B/6
• Practical experimental biology experience such as cell culture or microscopy
• Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team

Nice to have

• Basic programming or data analysis in Python or R (a merit, not required)

Pay and location

Doctoral students at KTH are salaried employees, paid monthly under KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement; the advert gives no figure. The post is full time in Stockholm, starting by agreement.
