Job Description

Uppsala University’s Department of Ecology and Genetics is recruiting a PhD student in evolutionary and ecological genetics. The project asks whether evolution is repeatable and whether the same genes underlie repeated adaptations, using a large, ongoing Evolve-and-Resequence experiment in the seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus with phenotypic, RNA-seq and pool-seq data from several time points, plus global strains and related species for comparative genomics.

At a glance

  • Position: Doctoral student (1 post), full time
  • Where: Department of Ecology and Genetics, Evolutionary Biology Centre, Uppsala
  • Supervisors: David Berger (main) and SciLifeLab fellow Dr. Gabriela Montejo-Kovacevich (co-supervisor)
  • Start: 1 January 2027 or as agreed
  • Reference: UFV-PA 2026/2654
  • Apply by: 1 November 2026
  • Apply: 1 November 2026

About the evolutionary genetics PhD

  • Integrate mechanistic insights on adaptation with genomic data
  • Study determinism and chance in local adaptation and niche evolution
  • Analyse phenotypic, RNA-seq and DNA pool-seq data, with an emphasis on bioinformatics
  • Run additional experiments and comparative genomics as the project develops
  • Optional teaching up to 20%, which extends the position

The department provides free supercomputing through NAISS, SciLifeLab sequencing platforms, a Climate Lab with environmental chambers and greenhouses, and a PhD school shared with Uppsala’s other biology departments.
