DRDO advertises more research fellowships than almost any other organisation in India, and it fills most of them in a single day, in a room, with a queue outside. If you have never been to a walk-in interview, the format is disorienting: there is no application to submit, no acknowledgement e-mail, no shortlist. You read an advertisement, you decide you are eligible, and you turn up. This guide explains how that process actually works, what the laboratories are looking for, and the specific mistakes that send people home before they are even interviewed.
1. How DRDO fellowships are structured
DRDO runs roughly fifty laboratories, each with its own specialisation and its own recruitment. A fellowship is attached to a laboratory, not to DRDO centrally, so the work depends entirely on where you apply: radar at LRDE in Bengaluru, underwater acoustics at NPOL in Kochi, smart materials at DYSL-SM in Hyderabad, natural language processing at CAIR in Bengaluru, biodefence and food technology at DIBT in Mysuru.
The structure is consistent even when the subject is not:
- Junior Research Fellow (JRF) — the standard entry post, awarded initially for two years.
- Extension and upgrade — DRDO’s advertisements typically say the fellowship “may be upgraded as Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) for a period of one year (3rd Year) and further SRF may again be extended”, subject to performance. DIBT’s current advertisement puts the ceiling at four years.
- Research Associate (RA) — the post-PhD level, normally for two years. DIBT’s current advertisement pays ₹67,000 a month plus HRA at this level.
- Stipend — JRFs are paid at the national norm of ₹37,000 a month plus HRA, as DRDO’s DGRE and DIBT advertisements state explicitly.
One sentence appears in nearly every DRDO advertisement and deserves to be read carefully: the offer of a fellowship “does not confer on fellows any right for absorption in DRDO”. A fellowship is research training with a stipend, not a back door into a permanent post. Many former fellows do join DRDO as scientists, but through separate recruitment.
2. Eligibility: the two routes, and the GATE trap
Almost every DRDO engineering fellowship offers the same two routes:
- Bachelor’s route: B.E./B.Tech. in first division in the relevant discipline, with a valid GATE score (or NET, for some posts).
- Master’s route: M.E./M.Tech. in first division at both graduate and postgraduate level — no GATE needed.
Two details catch people out. First, on the master’s route, first division is required at both levels: a strong M.Tech. does not compensate for a 58% B.Tech. Second, GATE validity is counted on the interview date, not the application date. LRDE’s current advertisement accepts GATE 2024, 2025 and 2026; another laboratory may specify a narrower window. Check the advertisement you are actually answering.
Discipline names matter more than you would expect, because Indian universities name the same degree half a dozen ways. LRDE handles this by publishing a list of accepted equivalents — Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication, Electronics and Telecommunication, Electronics and Computer Engineering, and several more. If your degree title is unusual, find that list in the advertisement before you travel.
3. Age, and the relaxations
The upper age limit for a JRF is 28 years, and for a walk-in it is calculated as on the date of interview, not the advertisement date. Relaxation is normally three years for OBC candidates and five years for SC, ST and candidates with disabilities; CAIR’s current advertisement states exactly this. Research Associate posts run to 35 years, with the same relaxations.
If you are claiming a relaxation, carry the community certificate in original. It is not something you can e-mail afterwards.
4. What a walk-in day actually looks like
The pattern is broadly the same across laboratories:
- Reporting. Usually 09:00 to 09:30. NPOL’s current advertisement gives 09:30 on a Saturday; DYSL-SM’s gives 09:30. Reach early — entry to a defence establishment takes time, and security will check your identity document against the advertisement’s requirements.
- Document verification. Originals are checked against copies. This is where most eliminations happen, and they are procedural rather than academic. VRDE’s advertisement sets out document verification as a distinct stage before the test and interview.
- Written test, at some laboratories. VRDE runs a written test after verification and before the interview. Others go straight to interview.
- Interview. A panel of scientists from the laboratory. Expect fundamentals, your project, and whether you understand what the laboratory does.
Bring, at minimum: all mark sheets and degree certificates in original plus a self-attested set of copies, your GATE or NET scorecard, a government photo identity document (Aadhaar, passport, PAN or driving licence), community certificate if applicable, and recent passport-size photographs. Candidates already working in government, a public sector undertaking or an autonomous body must route the application through proper channel — check this weeks ahead, not the night before.
5. How to prepare, honestly
A walk-in interview is short, and the panel is assessing a narrow set of things.
- Know your own project completely. The single most reliable question is “explain what you did”. Have a five-minute version and a fifteen-minute version, including what went wrong and what you changed. Vague answers about a project you barely touched are obvious immediately.
- Revise undergraduate fundamentals, not research frontiers. For a radar post: the radar range equation, pulse compression, the difference between phased-array and mechanically scanned antennas, sampling and the FFT. For smart materials: the martensitic transformation, the piezoelectric effect, hysteresis. For an NLP post at CAIR: attention, tokenisation, fine-tuning, and complexity analysis — CAIR lists “design and analysis of algorithms” first among its desirable criteria, ahead of deep learning.
- Read what the laboratory does. Each DRDO advertisement opens with a paragraph describing the establishment’s charter. That paragraph is free information about what the panel cares about. NPOL’s names underwater acoustics and oceanography; DYSL-SM’s names accelerated materials development, micro-robotics and stealth technologies; DIBT’s names detection of food-borne pathogens and military nutrition.
- Name your tools precisely. Saying “I have used simulation software” is worth nothing. Saying which package, what you modelled, and how you validated it is worth a great deal — especially where the advertisement lists desirables such as finite element packages, CAD, 3D printing, PyTorch or Docker.
- Be ready for a single-vacancy interview. Many of these adverts are for one position. Your GATE score gets you into the room; it does not get you the fellowship.
6. Reading a DRDO advertisement properly
Every advert carries an advertisement number (for example CAIR/HRT/JRF/2026/02 or NPOL/JRF/01/2026), a published date, and an end date. The DRDO vacancies page lists all of them together with those dates, and each entry links to the advertisement PDF and, where relevant, an application form.
Watch for the difference between the end date on the vacancy listing and the interview date inside the PDF — they are not always the same thing, and for walk-ins the interview date is the one that governs your eligibility and your travel. Where a laboratory asks for applications by post instead of a walk-in, as DIBT currently does with hard-copy applications to the Centre Head in Mysuru, the posting deadline is what matters.
Also note that “anticipated” vacancies appear in some advertisements, NPOL’s included. An anticipated vacancy may not materialise, so if you are travelling a long distance for a single anticipated post, check with the laboratory first.
7. Beyond JRF: fellowships for senior scientists
DRDO also runs a scheme at the opposite end of a career. Its current advertisement DRDO/DHR&V/C&F-2026-01 offers two DRDO Chairs, seven Distinguished Fellowships and six Fellowships for scientists who have retired, or are about to retire, from Pay Levels 16, 15 and 14 respectively — paying ₹1,25,000, ₹1,00,000 and ₹80,000 a month, on a renewable three-year contract. Seven of the fifteen positions are open to people from outside DRDO, including the tri-services and central government scientific and academic institutions. Applications go to the Directorate of Human Resource and Vigilance at DRDO Bhawan in New Delhi, endorsed by the laboratory Director and Cluster DG where the applicant wishes to serve.
