A research job salary in India is set by one government rule for most posts, and the rule is public. The Ministry of Education fixed the rates in an order dated 11 September 2023, following a Department of Science and Technology memorandum of 26 June 2023. Every central-funded JRF, SRF and Research Associate post is meant to pay those figures. This guide gives the official rates, then shows what the advertisements on this site actually offer, using the 485 Indian research jobs we have published and checked against the original ads.
At a glance
- Junior Research Fellow (JRF): ₹37,000 a month
- Senior Research Fellow (SRF): ₹42,000 a month
- Research Associate I: ₹58,000 a month
- Research Associate II: ₹61,000 a month
- Research Associate III: ₹67,000 a month
- On top: HRA, at central government rates for your city, worked out on the fellowship amount
- Nothing on top: no DA, no bonus, no leave travel concession, no retirement benefits
- The catch: 57% of the Indian research jobs we published state no figure at all
The official rates, and where they come from
The current rates were set by the Department of Science and Technology in Office Memorandum DST/PCPM/Z-06/2022, dated 26 June 2023. The Ministry of Education passed the same rates on to all IITs and other institutions it funds in F.No.12-2/2023-U1, dated 11 September 2023. ICAR, DBT and other departments issued their own versions.
The increase was large. JRF went from ₹31,000 to ₹37,000, SRF from ₹35,000 to ₹42,000, and Research Associate I from ₹47,000 to ₹58,000.
Two conditions sit behind the JRF and SRF figures, and people miss both:
- You move from JRF to SRF only after two years and an external assessment by the institution where you are enrolled for your PhD. The upgrade is earned, never automatic.
- Once you are an SRF, a satisfactory annual assessment is required to keep the fellowship.
What the advertisements actually say
We checked every Indian listing we have published against its official advertisement. Of 485, some 209 state a monthly figure. Here is how those figures compare with the rule.
Junior Research Fellow
Of 49 JRF posts that stated pay, 41 offered exactly ₹37,000. Two offered more. Six offered less, the lowest being ₹25,000 at BIT Mesra.
So the rule holds for JRF roughly five times out of six. When an advert shows a lower number, it usually means the post is funded by a state agency, an industry sponsor or the institute’s own budget, where the central rate carries no force.
Senior Research Fellow
SRF is where the rule weakens. Of 15 posts stating pay, only 9 offered ₹42,000. Six, or 40%, offered less, down to ₹33,000 at IISER Tirupati.
Check an SRF advert’s figure before you assume it follows the norm. The gap can be ₹9,000 a month, which is ₹1.08 lakh over a year.
Research Associate
Of 44 RA posts stating pay, 18 offered exactly ₹58,000, which is the RA-I rate. Thirteen offered more, because institutes may place an associate at RA-II or RA-III based on experience. Thirteen offered less, down to ₹25,000.
The spread here is the widest of any position, from ₹25,000 to ₹1,00,000 a month. “Research Associate” is a title used for three different grades and also, loosely, for project staff who hold none of them. Read the essential qualification in the advert, which is the part that tells you which grade is really on offer.
Research Assistant and project staff
These sit outside the fellowship rules. Across 22 posts, the median was ₹28,645 a month and the floor was ₹20,000. The title carries no fixed rate, so the advert’s figure is the only figure.
What you take home
The fellowship amount is the headline. Four rules decide what reaches you.
- HRA is paid, and it is real money. It follows central government rates for the class of city where you work (X, Y or Z), and the percentage is applied to the fellowship amount. Ask the institute for its current circular, because the rate changes with government orders.
- Hostel accommodation cancels it. A fellow living in institute hostel accommodation gets no HRA. That single line explains most of the gap between two people on the same fellowship.
- There is no DA, no bonus and no leave travel concession. The order says so plainly for all three categories.
- There are no retirement benefits. A fellowship is training, and the law treats it that way.
Medical allowance follows the rules of the institution running the project. JRFs and SRFs get casual leave only, while Research Associates follow the host institution’s leave rules. Maternity leave is available to women in all three categories. Travel to a conference in India is paid at second AC by rail, and attending counts as being on duty once your institution approves.
Why most adverts show no figure
Of the 485 Indian research jobs we published, 276 gave no pay figure at all. That is 57%, and the reason is usually one of three:
- The advert says “as per norms”, leaving the applicant to look the rule up.
- The post is funded by a project whose sanction letter has the figure, and the department publishes the advert without it.
- The pay genuinely depends on which grade you are placed in, which is decided after the interview.
“As per norms” is the most common. It usually means the figures in this guide. It is still worth an email to the contact person in the advert before you travel for a walk-in, because “norms” sometimes means the institute’s own, lower, norms.
How to check an advert in five minutes
- Find the funding agency. A DST, SERB, ANRF, DBT, ICMR or Ministry of Education project should pay the rates above. A state government or institute-funded post need not.
- Read the essential qualification. For an RA post it decides your grade, and the grade decides the pay.
- Look for the word “consolidated”. A consolidated amount usually includes HRA, so the headline looks bigger and the take-home is similar.
- Check the duration. A one-year post at ₹42,000 pays less over time than a three-year post at ₹37,000, and the three-year post gets you the SRF upgrade.
- Ask. Every official advert carries a contact. A short email asking for the monthly figure and whether HRA is paid is normal and expected.
Frequently asked questions
What is the JRF stipend in India in 2026?
₹37,000 a month, plus HRA, for a JRF in a project funded by a central government department or agency. The rate comes from the DST memorandum of 26 June 2023. In 41 of the 49 JRF adverts we checked, this was the figure offered.
What is the difference between JRF and SRF pay?
₹5,000 a month. JRF is ₹37,000 and SRF is ₹42,000. You move up after two years and a successful external assessment by the institution where you are enrolled for your PhD.
Do research fellows get HRA?
Yes, at central government rates for the city, worked out on the fellowship amount. A fellow living in institute hostel accommodation is not entitled to it.
Is the stipend taxable?
A fellowship received to meet the cost of education has been treated as exempt under section 10(16) of the Income Tax Act, and many institutes pay JRF and SRF without deducting tax. Research Associate pay is more often treated as salary or professional income. Practice differs between institutes, so ask your accounts section what they deduct and get it in writing before you plan around it.
What does a Research Associate earn in India?
₹58,000, ₹61,000 or ₹67,000 a month, for grades I, II and III. The institute decides your grade from your experience. In the adverts we checked, the real range ran from ₹25,000 to ₹1,00,000, so read the advert and do not assume the grade.
Why does one advert pay less than the government rate?
Because the rate binds projects funded by central government departments and agencies. A post paid from a state scheme, an industry-sponsored project or an institute’s own funds can offer anything. That is legal, and it is why the figure in the advert matters more than the rule.
Does a postdoc pay more than an SRF?
Usually yes. Across the postdoctoral posts we published with a stated figure, the middle of the range started at ₹65,000 a month, and the top reached ₹1,30,000. Named fellowships pay more than project-funded postdoc posts.
