IIT Bombay is taking applications for PhD admission in January 2027, the Spring Semester of 2026-27. The same call covers DDDP, the new Double Doctoral Degree Programme with Tohoku University in Japan. The last date without a late fee is 17 October 2026.

What the IIT Bombay PhD admission for January 2027 covers
- PhD admission in all academic units, except the Ashank Desai Centre for Policy Studies and MED-TRIC, which take no students this semester

- Each unit runs its own written test and/or interview, online or on campus
Why this role matters
IIT Bombay’s January intake opens every department except two, with a fellowship that rises to Rs 47,000 a month on the RA route. The new DDDP adds a rare chance to earn two doctorates, one from IIT Bombay and one from Tohoku University. You can start in January without waiting a year.
Eligibility
- A master’s in engineering or technology; an MBA with a BTech/BE; a 4-year bachelor’s in engineering, technology or medicine; a 4-year BS; a master’s in science; or a master’s in arts or commerce
- Holders of a bachelor’s, MSc, MA or MCom also need one of these: a valid GATE score (JEST is accepted only for Physics and Biosciences), UGC NET including lectureship, selection in another national exam run by MoE agencies, provisional DST-INSPIRE selection, or two years of professional experience
- Marks: 60%, first class or CPI 6.0/10 for GN/EWS/OBC-NC; 55%, first class or matching CPI for SC/ST/PwD
- Departments may set extra conditions; read the unit’s page in the brochure
The full rules are in the IIT Bombay PhD brochure 2026-27 (PDF). The application fee is Rs 300 for most candidates and Rs 150 for women and SC/ST/PwD candidates. The fee rises by Rs 500 in the late-fee window.
Pay and duration
- Teaching Assistantship (TA): Rs 37,000 a month for the first two years, then Rs 42,000, for up to five years or until thesis submission; TA holders give 8 hours a week of teaching support
- Research Assistantship (RA): Rs 42,000 a month for the first two years, then Rs 47,000; RA seats are listed by each unit

Apply online on the IIT Bombay online application portal. Forms have been open since 16 September 2026. The last date is 17 October 2026, or 21 October 2026 with the late fee. The brochure says there are no downloadable forms.
