The project

The position is in the research group of Achilleas Savva in the Department of Microelectronics. The group develops multifunctional bioelectronic interfaces that can address fundamental questions in biology and enable new technologies for treating disease, combining organic electronic materials, soft hydrogels and advanced microfabrication and 3D printing so devices can interact with human cells and tissues at high spatial and temporal resolution.

You would start a new project on 3D-printed hydrogel bioelectronics for neural interfaces, using one-photon polymerization and high-resolution 3D printing to make soft hydrogel structures and integrating them with organic electronic materials, including conducting polymers.

What you need

  • A background in microelectronics, materials science, bioengineering, chemistry or a related field
  • Interest in working across soft materials, device fabrication and biology
  • Read the official advertisement for the full requirements

Pay and conditions

TU Delft pays PhD candidates on the Dutch university scale: €3,204 gross a month in the first year, rising to €4,051 in the fourth. The appointment is for four years. TU Delft adds a pension scheme, and the usual Dutch holiday and end-of-year allowances.

How to apply

How to prepare for this application

  • Show fabrication as well as theory. Two-photon or one-photon polymerization, cleanroom work and 3D printing all count.
  • Conducting polymers are central. PEDOT:PSS experience is worth naming if you have it.
  • Apply through the button on the job page. TU Delft only takes applications through its own system.
  • Check the Dutch 30% ruling. If you move to the Netherlands for this post you may qualify for a tax advantage that changes your take-home pay noticeably.
