The project

You would develop and analyse new process-based mathematical models to improve understanding and prediction of sediment dynamics in hyperturbid estuaries. These systems carry extremely high suspended sediment concentrations, show strong interactions between flow and sediment transport, and form fluid mud layers, which makes them among the hardest coastal environments to model.

The research focuses on how hydrodynamics, turbulence, sediment transport and sediment trapping interact under highly turbid conditions. Existing idealised estuarine models do not capture these feedbacks well, particularly once sediment concentrations are high enough to change the turbulence and so the flow itself.

What you need

  • A master’s in civil engineering, physical oceanography, applied mathematics, fluid mechanics or a related field
  • Strength in mathematical modelling and numerical methods
  • Read the official advertisement for the full requirements

Pay and conditions

TU Delft pays PhD candidates on the Dutch university scale: €3,204 gross a month in the first year, rising to €4,051 in the fourth. The appointment is for four years. TU Delft adds a pension scheme, and the usual Dutch holiday and end-of-year allowances.

How to apply

Apply through the application button on the TU Delft job page and upload the documents it asks for. The advertisement says to apply no later than 12 October 2026.

How to prepare for this application

  • This is a modelling post. Show the equations and codes you have worked with.
  • Turbulence-sediment feedback is the heart of it. Say what you know about stratification and damping.
  • Apply through the button on the job page. TU Delft only takes applications through its own system.
  • Check the Dutch 30% ruling. If you move to the Netherlands for this post you may qualify for a tax advantage that changes your take-home pay noticeably.
