Job Description
TU Delft is hiring a postdoc to build validated electromagnetic transient models of high-voltage components and protection for the UTOPYS national research infrastructure. Applications close on 25 October 2026.
At a glance
- Post: Postdoc in EMT Modelling of High-Voltage Components and Protection (UTOPYS)
- Where: Electrical Sustainable Power Lab, Delft University of Technology, Netherlands

The project
Future power systems are converter-dominated, fast, and interconnected across scales that today’s modelling tools cannot capture. UTOPYS, which stands for Understanding Large and Complex Power Systems, answers that with a real-time power system simulator: a large RTDS cluster at TU Delft’s ESP Lab that simulates thousands of nodes in full electromagnetic transient detail, in real time, and that can be coupled to hardware, SCADA systems and other simulators.
UTOPYS is a ten-year national research infrastructure running from 2026 to 2036, built by a consortium of eight Dutch universities and research institutes and coordinated by TU Delft. A simulator of that size is only as good as the models running on it, so the first phase is dedicated to the UTOPYS Library: an open, modular and validated collection of EMT component models.
This post focuses on the high-voltage component and protection side of that library: the transformers, cables, switchgear and protection schemes whose transient behaviour decides whether a simulation of a converter-dominated grid can be trusted.
What you need
- A PhD in electrical power engineering or a closely related field
- Experience with electromagnetic transient simulation, ideally with RTDS or a comparable real-time platform
- Knowledge of high-voltage components and power system protection
- Read the official advertisement for the full requirements
Pay and conditions
Salary and benefits follow the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The advertisement states no figure of its own, so check the scale for your grade. TU Delft adds a pension scheme, and the usual Dutch holiday and end-of-year allowances.
How to apply
Apply through the application button on the TU Delft job page and upload the documents it asks for. The advertisement says to apply no later than 25 October 2026.

How to prepare for this application
- Real-time simulation is the differentiator. RTDS, RTDS-adjacent or hardware-in-the-loop experience should lead your application.
- This is a ten-year infrastructure. Models you build here are meant to outlast the post.
- Apply through the button on the job page. TU Delft only takes applications through its own system.
- Check the Dutch 30% ruling. If you move to the Netherlands for this post you may qualify for a tax advantage that changes your take-home pay noticeably.
