The project
Dutch canal cities face real problems with the maintenance and safety of historical inner-city infrastructure. Masonry quay walls make up a large part of it, especially in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Den Bosch. Deciding what to repair first means estimating how much service life these structures have left.
The TU Delft Structural Mechanics group has built an advanced numerical modelling strategy that predicts how quay walls respond all the way to collapse. What is missing is experimental data to validate it: current laboratory and field results are limited.
As the postdoc, you would design a new large-scale experimental testing procedure to evaluate how a masonry quay-wall superstructure responds to settlement and other loading. Read the official advertisement for the full description of the test programme.
What you need
- A PhD in structural or civil engineering
- Experience designing and running large-scale structural experiments
- An interest in masonry and historical structures
- Read the official advertisement for the full requirements
Pay and conditions
Salary and benefits follow the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The advertisement states no figure of its own, so check the scale for your grade. TU Delft adds a pension scheme, and the usual Dutch holiday and end-of-year allowances.
How to apply
Apply through the application button on the TU Delft job page and upload the documents it asks for. The advertisement says to apply no later than 8 November 2026.

How to prepare for this application
- This is a hands-on laboratory post. Describe rigs you have designed and specimens you have taken to failure.
- The point is model validation. Say how you would design a test that actually constrains a numerical model.
- Apply through the button on the job page. TU Delft only takes applications through its own system.
- Check the Dutch 30% ruling. If you move to the Netherlands for this post you may qualify for a tax advantage that changes your take-home pay noticeably.
