About the work
This is a three-year, full-time, fixed-term position starting in September 2027, based in the Centre of Islamic Studies within the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.
Research and outreach posts at the Centre are distinctive. The postholder is expected to do two things: pursue a research project in an area of Islamic art, architecture or material culture, and design and run a set of outreach activities reaching beyond the academic community.
What the outreach looks like depends on the appointee’s specialism. The Centre welcomes collaboration with the Fitzwilliam Museum, other Cambridge museums, the University Library and local schools, and is open to other proposals.
What you need
- A PhD in Islamic art, architecture, material culture or a closely related field
- A research project you can propose and carry out independently
- Ideas for outreach beyond academia, and the willingness to run them
Pay
The advertised range is £37,694 to £46,049 a year. This is a fixed-term post.

How to prepare for this application
- The outreach half is not decoration. Bring a concrete proposal, ideally naming a museum or school partner.
- It starts in September 2027. A long lead time, which suits someone finishing a doctorate now.
- Quote the reference, VN50843. Cambridge asks for it on the form and in every email about the post.
- Check your right to work in the UK. Every Cambridge advert carries this condition, and it is the usual reason an overseas application stalls.
