About the work

The Loke Centre for Trophoblast Research was founded in 2007 and provides an environment for PhD training in placental biology and reproductive science. It brings together more than 30 principal investigators with a shared interest in the scientific study of the placenta, early development and maternal-fetal interactions during pregnancy.

Those investigators are spread across Cambridge: the Departments of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pathology and Genetics, and allied institutes including the Institute of Metabolic Science, the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, the Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Disease, the LMB, Babraham and the Wellcome Sanger Institute.

A Loke CTR Studentship is held within the relevant department or institute, so your choice of supervisor also decides where you sit.

What you need

  • A strong degree in biological sciences, biochemistry, genetics or a related subject
  • A supervisor and project within the Centre’s network, which you should identify before applying
  • Read the official advertisement for the full entry requirements and funding conditions

Pay

The studentship is advertised as fully funded. The advertisement gives no figure, so confirm the stipend and fee cover with the department before you accept.

How to apply

How to prepare for this application

  • Pick a principal investigator first. More than 30 are affiliated, and the studentship is held in their department.
  • The Centre spans many institutes. Where you work day to day depends entirely on the supervisor you choose.
  • Quote the reference, PM51273. Cambridge asks for it on the form and in every email about the post.
  • Check your right to work in the UK. Every Cambridge advert carries this condition, and it is the usual reason an overseas application stalls.
