The advertisement is IIT/SRIC/R/UNM/2026/101, dated 5 October 2026. Its project title reads “Study of Internal-eaves in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea using NISAR observations and numerical model”. “Internal-eaves” appears to be a typo for internal waves.

About the ocean science SRF at IIT Kharagpur

  • Study internal waves in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea
  • Work with observations from NISAR, the NASA-ISRO radar satellite
  • Run and analyse a numerical ocean model
  • Programming and data analysis for the project

The ad names the project and the skills it prefers. It does not list duties; the points above follow those.

Why this role matters

Internal waves move heat and nutrients and can stress offshore structures. NISAR data are new, so an SRF here can be among the first to use them on Indian seas.

Eligibility

  • A postgraduate degree in basic science, or a graduate or postgraduate professional degree, with selection through CSIR-UGC NET (lectureship counts) or GATE, or through a national exam run by DST, DBT, DAE, DOS, DRDO, MoE, ICAR, ICMR, IIT, IISc, IISER, NISER and similar bodies
  • Two years of research experience
  • M.Sc. in Physics, Mathematics, Oceanography or Atmospheric Science with valid NET or GATE and at least two years of research; or
  • B.Tech in Civil, Mechanical, Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture, or Aerospace Engineering with valid GATE and at least two years of research; or
  • M.Tech in Physics, Mathematics, Climate Sciences, Oceanography, Atmospheric Science, Ocean Engineering, or Earth System Science and Technology
  • Numerical modelling or programming experience is preferred
  • Upper age limit: 32 years

Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview call. The advertisement lists no application fee. The appointment is for one year to start, and can be extended up to four years in total or until the project ends, whichever is earlier, based on performance.

Pay and duration

  • ₹42,000 a month, consolidated, depending on qualification and experience
  • One year to start, extendable up to four years or until the project ends

How to prepare for this application

  • Revise internal-wave physics: stratification, buoyancy frequency, internal tides and solitary waves.
  • Know how radar sees them: internal waves change surface roughness, which SAR images pick up as bright and dark bands.
  • Read on NISAR: its L- and S-band radars and what its repeat cycle means for ocean work.
  • Show model skills: ROMS, MITgcm or your own code, plus Python or MATLAB for satellite data.
  • Know the region: the Andaman Sea and the northern Bay of Bengal are internal-wave hotspots. Use our Find a supervisor page to look at ocean science faculty.

About IIT Kharagpur and SRIC

IIT Kharagpur, founded in 1951, was the first of the Indian Institutes of Technology. Its Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy (SRIC) unit manages externally funded research projects and recruits the temporary staff, such as JRFs, SRFs and project associates, who work on them. These posts last for the tenure in the advertisement, or until the project ends.
