Job Description

This postdoc in quantum optics theory is at DTU Physics, Denmark. You will develop a theory of spectroscopy with entangled surface plasmons. You will lead a new Villum Experiment project with Associate Professor Simone Latini and Dr. Matteo Castagnola.

At a glance

  • Position: Postdoc, 2 years, full time
  • Where: 2DPHYS section, DTU Physics, Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark
  • Group: Theory of light-matter interaction in quantum materials
  • Start: 1 January 2027 or by agreement, no later than 1 March 2027
  • Apply: 30 October 2026, 23:59 Danish time

About the entangled plasmon project

  • Develop analytical theory for nonlinear absorption of entangled surface plasmons by molecules on surfaces
  • Design entangled plasmon states that boost or block chosen interaction pathways
  • Link the signals to quantum-chemistry pictures of charge transfer and intermolecular forces
  • Lead the research activities of the project

The project asks a simple question. Can entangled-state spectroscopy tell apart interactions that happen together, such as charge transfer and polarisation forces? The group has close links to the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter in Hamburg.

Why this role matters

Quantum light could make spectroscopy more selective than classical light allows. This project brings quantum optics into chemistry. You would lead it from the start, which is a strong step towards independence.

What DTU is looking for

  • A PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or a related field
  • Experience in the theory of light-matter interaction: quantum optics, nonlinear optics, spectroscopy or plasmonics
  • Scientific programming in Python or Fortran
  • Strong English and clear scientific communication
  • Research output at an international level, and good teamwork

Nice to have

  • A background in theoretical chemistry

Pay and location

The ad gives no figure. Pay follows the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations, and supplements can be negotiated under DTU’s salary structure. Because DTU works in critical technology, open-source background checks may be done.

How to apply

Apply through the official DTU page. The closing date is 30 October 2026, 23:59 Danish time. Click “Apply now” and upload one PDF in English: a one-page cover letter, CV, MSc/PhD diplomas, a publication list and the names and contact details of two references.

How to prepare for this application

  • Show analytical work in your letter; the ad wants a theorist who enjoys derivations
  • Revise plasmon quantisation, two-photon absorption and entangled-photon spectroscopy
  • Be ready to discuss how charge transfer and polarisation forces appear in a nonlinear signal
  • Prepare a one-page cover letter; the ad sets that limit
  • Have two references ready with email addresses or phone numbers

About DTU

The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) was founded in 1829 by Hans Christian Ørsted. Its main campus is in Kgs. Lyngby, north of Copenhagen. It has about 13,800 students, 1,600 PhD students and 6,500 staff.

DTU Physics does research in experimental and theoretical physics, including quantum physics and quantum technologies.
