At a glance
- Posts: Junior Research Fellow (JRF), two posts
- Where: Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, IIT Roorkee
- Principal Investigator: Prof. Amalendu Patnaik
- Funded by: ANRF (J C Bose Grant 2026)
- Fellowship: ₹37,000 a month for the first two years, then ₹42,000 from year 3 to year 5, plus HRA
- Duration: One year to start, extended on performance
- Open to: Indian nationals only
- Apply by: 5 November 2026, 5 pm, by email
The project is titled “Vortex Electromagnetic Waves and Their Use for Defense and Civilian Applications”. The ad says the selected candidate may get a chance to join the Ph.D. programme.
About the vortex electromagnetic waves JRF at IIT Roorkee
- Research on vortex electromagnetic waves, which carry orbital angular momentum
- Work towards defence and civilian uses of these waves
- Work in the RF and microwave area of the ECE department
The ad’s job description is short: research on the project topic. The points above follow the project title.
Why this role matters
Vortex waves can carry several data streams on one frequency, and they show up differently on radar. India’s defence labs and telecom firms want engineers who can design such antennas. A J C Bose grant is also a long, stable project, with pay that rises in year three.
Eligibility
- M.E./M.Tech. in RF and Microwave Engineering, Communication Systems, Signal Processing or equivalent; or M.Sc. in Electronics
- You must have qualified GATE or NET
- Indian nationals only
- SC/ST candidates get preference when qualifications and experience are equal
Only shortlisted candidates are called. The interview is online. Check that you meet the eligibility before you apply. The ad gives no age limit.
Pay and duration
- ₹37,000 a month for the first two years
- ₹42,000 a month from the third to the fifth year
- HRA as applicable, on top
- One year to start, extended based on performance
How to apply
Email your application to the Principal Investigator at amalendu.patnaik@ece.iitr.ac.in. Send an application on plain paper with a detailed CV that lists your degrees in order. Add your research and industry experience, attested copies of degrees and experience certificates, and proof of GATE or NET. The last date is 5 November 2026, 5 pm. The official advertisement (PDF) is on the IIT Roorkee Project Jobs page.
Key dates

How to prepare for this application
- Learn the basics of OAM waves: what orbital angular momentum is and how mode number shapes the beam.
- Know how OAM beams are made: uniform circular antenna arrays, spiral phase plates and metasurfaces.
- Revise antenna theory: array factor, phase feeding, radiation patterns and near-field versus far-field.
- Show your EM tools: a simulation in CST, HFSS or a similar solver is a strong talking point.
- Read the group's work: look at Prof. Amalendu Patnaik's papers on antennas and computational EM. Use our Find a supervisor page to compare RF labs.
About IIT Roorkee
IIT Roorkee traces its roots to the Thomason College of Civil Engineering, founded in 1847. It became an Indian Institute of Technology in 2001. The campus is in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. Faculty members hire project staff on their research grants, and the institute posts these ads on its Project Jobs page.
