About the work

The immune system can detect cancer, and that fact is the basis of immunotherapy. Immunotherapy has changed cancer treatment in recent years, and it is still unclear exactly how the immune system detects and responds to pre-cancerous lesions.

What is known is that activating or deactivating anti-cancer immune cells involves many cell types communicating dynamically in specific tissue niches. The Halim laboratory works on resolving the interactions between tissue-resident immune cells, aiming to identify mechanisms that can be targeted therapeutically at different stages of cancer development.

What you need

  • A strong degree in immunology, cell biology, biochemistry or a related subject
  • Read the official advertisement and the group’s website for the full project details and entry requirements

Key dates

  • Deadline for application: 16 October 2026
  • Course start date: 1 October 2027

The long gap between the deadline and the start is normal for a Cambridge PhD studentship. It gives time for interviews, college admission and, for international students, a visa.

Pay

The studentship is advertised as fully funded. The advertisement gives no figure, so confirm the stipend and fee cover with the department before you accept.

How to prepare for this application

  • Read the Halim group's recent papers. Tissue-resident immune cells and innate lymphoid cells are the group's territory.
  • Pre-cancerous lesions are the specific interest. That is earlier than most tumour immunology, and it is the distinctive bit.
  • Quote the reference, SW51021. Cambridge asks for it on the form and in every email about the post.
  • Check your right to work in the UK. Every Cambridge advert carries this condition, and it is the usual reason an overseas application stalls.
