About the work
The Wang Group develops and applies interdisciplinary technologies that bridge high-resolution spatial biology and genome-wide discovery. By combining multi-omic sequencing with quantitative imaging, the group works towards a multi-scale understanding of how molecular composition and subcellular organisation shape cell function, plasticity and disease.
A central biological focus is extrachromosomal DNA: circular DNA elements that drive oncogene amplification, intratumour heterogeneity and therapeutic resistance across many aggressive solid cancers. Extrachromosomal DNA has become one of the most interesting problems in cancer genomics precisely because it breaks the assumptions built into conventional sequencing analysis.
The project helps develop and apply cutting-edge single-cell and spatial multi-omic methods.
What you need
- A strong degree in biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, physics, computer science or a related subject
- An interest in method development as well as biology, since the group builds its own technologies
- Read the official advertisement and the group’s website for the full project details
Key dates
- Deadline for application: 16 October 2026
- Course start date: 1 October 2027
The long gap between the deadline and the start is normal for a Cambridge PhD studentship. It gives time for interviews, college admission and, for international students, a visa.
Pay
The studentship is advertised as fully funded. The advertisement gives no figure, so confirm the stipend and fee cover with the department before you accept.
How to apply

How to prepare for this application
- This group builds methods. A quantitative or engineering background is as welcome as a biological one.
- Read about ecDNA first. It is the biological thread running through the group's work.
- Quote the reference, SW51030. Cambridge asks for it on the form and in every email about the post.
- Check your right to work in the UK. Every Cambridge advert carries this condition, and it is the usual reason an overseas application stalls.
