Job Description
IISER Berhampur’s Department of Chemical Sciences is hiring a Junior Research Fellow in organic chemistry for a BRNS-funded project led by Dr. Amit Kumar Simlandy, developing catalytic asymmetric 1,2-boronate rearrangements with an application in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT).

Boron neutron capture therapy is a cancer treatment in which boron-10 atoms, delivered to a tumour by a drug, absorb neutrons and release short-range particles that destroy the tumour cells. Making boron-containing molecules with precise three-dimensional structure is a synthetic chemistry challenge, and catalytic asymmetric reactions of boronates are one route to them.
About the JRF role
- Perform organic reactions for the project
- Purify and characterise products, including by NMR and HRMS
Eligibility
- M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry
- For IISER BS-MS students: a CGPA above 8.0
- A score in a national-level examination is desirable; any certificate or fellowship must be valid at the time of joining

Pay and duration
- Rs 37,000 plus HRA as applicable (first two years)
- Rs 42,000 plus HRA as applicable (third year)
- One year from joining, extendable depending on progress, performance and available funds

How to prepare for this application
- Organoboron chemistry: revise boronate complexes and 1,2-metallate rearrangements.
- Asymmetric catalysis: how enantioselectivity is achieved and measured (for example by chiral HPLC).
- Lab technique: column chromatography, air-sensitive handling and reading NMR and HRMS data.
- BNCT: a short reading on why boron delivery to tumours matters.
- Skill test: practise mechanism questions and interpreting spectra, which such tests often include.
