Job Description
Cambridge is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate in oceanography to model ocean alkalinity enhancement, a carbon removal approach being tested at sea. The salary is £37,694 to £46,049 a year and applications close on 19 October 2026.

About the work
You would join the Ocean Dynamics group in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, supervised by Professor John Taylor and Associate Professor Oscar Branson. The post is available from 15 November 2026 or another agreed start date.
The project is part of a wider programme coordinated by Frontier Climate to study ocean alkalinity enhancement. The Cambridge team builds a high-resolution model of the near-field environment around the site of the 2025 field trial run by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, working closely with Dr Adam Subhas and colleagues to investigate potential alkalinity loss through secondary mineral precipitation. The simulations also help assess sampling strategies.
The models use Oceananigans.jl for the physical processes at the field site and OceanBioME.jl to represent how dissolving and sinking particles interact with seawater carbon chemistry.
What you need
- Experience in ocean modelling, particularly with Oceananigans, which the advertisement calls highly desirable
- Knowledge of seawater carbon chemistry is desirable but not essential
- The ability to plan and manage your own research, communicate technical material clearly and build collaborations
- You may be asked to help supervise student projects and develop students’ research skills
Pay
The advertised range is £37,694 to £46,049 a year. This is a fixed-term post.
How to apply
Apply online through the Cambridge job page. Click Apply, register an account with the University’s recruitment system if you do not have one, and complete the form. Quote reference LE51157 on your application and in any correspondence about the vacancy. You will normally be asked for a CV and the contact details of academic referees, so line those up before you start.
One thing to check first. The University states that it has a responsibility to ensure all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK. If you are applying from outside the UK, read the visa position for this post before you spend time on the application.

How to prepare for this application
- Oceananigans.jl is the named tool. If you have used it, say so in the first line; if not, say what you have modelled with.
- Julia matters here. Both named packages are Julia.
- Carbon chemistry is only desirable. A physical oceanographer willing to learn it should still apply.
- Quote the reference, LE51157. Cambridge asks for it on the form and in every email about the post.
- Line up your referees early. Cambridge contacts them during selection, so tell them before you apply.
- Check your right to work in the UK. Every Cambridge advert carries this condition, and it is the usual reason an overseas application stalls.
