Uppsala University is hiring a postdoc to model high-entropy electrolytes for lithium and sodium batteries with molecular simulation and AI, in Professor Patrik Johansson’s new group within the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre. The project is funded by a Swedish Research Council Distinguished Professor Grant for next-generation batteries.

About the postdoc project
- Model several types of high-entropy electrolytes at the molecular level for lithium and sodium batteries, with a focus on solvent-free salt melts
- Use mainly molecular dynamics and small DFT calculations, possibly with COSMO-RS
- Develop and apply modern AI and machine learning methods to explore, understand and optimise the electrolytes
- Link design and material choices to structure, dynamics and performance; teach up to 20% and supervise students
High-entropy electrolytes mix many different salts or solvents to create liquids with unusual properties, and solvent-free salt melts are one promising class for safer batteries. The chemical space is huge, which is why modelling combined with machine learning is used to explore it efficiently.
What Uppsala University is looking for
- A doctoral degree in chemistry, physics or materials, normally awarded within three years of the deadline (exceptions for illness, parental leave and similar circumstances)
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Documented experience in molecular-level modelling
- Documented experience in AI and machine learning for materials science
Nice to have
- Research experience with electrolytes and modern batteries
- Applying AI and machine learning in battery research
Pay and location
Uppsala University sets an individual salary for this post; the posting gives no figure. It is a two-year temporary position in Uppsala, Sweden.
