The project

Light water reactors are the current reference in the nuclear industry, and the existing fleet will reach the end of its operating licences within a few years. Generation IV reactors, among them the Molten Salt Reactor, are being developed to be more efficient, safer and more sustainable.

One bottleneck for commercialising the technology is a thorough understanding and model of the corrosion chemistry between molten salt nuclear fuel and the structural materials in the reactor core. Molten salt is a very corrosive medium at operating temperatures, and the long-term integrity of those structural materials is central to safety. Their performance has to be assessed, and new corrosion mitigation strategies developed to extend their life.

That is the goal of this post: to understand the chemistry well enough to predict it, and then to do something about it.

What you need

  • A PhD in chemistry, materials science, nuclear engineering or a closely related field
  • Experience with high-temperature chemistry, molten salts or corrosion science
  • Read the official advertisement for the full requirements

Pay and conditions

Salary and benefits follow the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The advertisement states no figure of its own, so check the scale for your grade. TU Delft adds a pension scheme, and the usual Dutch holiday and end-of-year allowances.

How to apply

Apply through the application button on the TU Delft job page and upload the documents it asks for. The advertisement says to apply no later than 14 October 2026.

How to prepare for this application

  • High-temperature experimental work is the core skill. Say what you have run and at what temperatures.
  • Modelling matters as much as experiment here. The advert asks for understanding and modelling together.
  • Apply through the button on the job page. TU Delft only takes applications through its own system.
  • Check the Dutch 30% ruling. If you move to the Netherlands for this post you may qualify for a tax advantage that changes your take-home pay noticeably.
