About the work

The post sits on a Wellcome Trust funded project led by Dr Guangting Mai, studying the neural basis of audiovisual speech processing in adult cochlear implant users. Main advisors and collaborators include Dr Matt Davis and Dr Bob Carlyon at the CBU and Professor Doug Hartley at Nottingham BRC.

The project asks how hearing and vision work together to support everyday speech comprehension for implant users. It also addresses a pressing clinical question: whether processing visual speech, meaning a talker’s lip movements in face-to-face conversation, is linked to adaptive or maladaptive changes in auditory processing during rehabilitation.

The work combines cross-sectional and longitudinal experiments in adult implant users with electroencephalography and high-density diffuse optical tomography. The findings would help clinicians decide how patients should be advised to use visual speech, and could support brain imaging as a way to predict outcomes after implantation.

What you need

  • A PhD in neuroscience, psychology, or auditory or speech science
  • A strong background in the methods the project uses. Read the official advertisement for the full person specification

How to prepare for this application

  • EEG and HD-DOT are the named methods. Say which you have used and on which populations.
  • Clinical populations are different from student volunteers. Any experience testing patients is worth stating.
  • This project has a clinical question at its centre, so show you can connect a brain measure to advice a clinician could actually give.
  • Quote the reference, SU51024. Cambridge asks for it on the form and in every email about the post.
  • Line up your referees early. Cambridge contacts them during selection, so tell them before you apply.
  • Check your right to work in the UK. Every Cambridge advert carries this condition, and it is the usual reason an overseas application stalls.
