Job Description
This power electronics R&D job in Hyderabad is with ABB’s Smart Power Division, part of its Electrification business. You will design, simulate and test power electronic products, including solid-state circuit breakers. You will work in an R&D team and report to a Chapter Lead.
At a glance
- Position: Power Electronic Engineer, Platform Solid State (full time, on site, JR00038195)
- Where: Hyderabad, India
- Division: Electrification business, Smart Power Division
- Degree: MS in Electrical or Electronic Engineering
- Posted: 25 September 2026
- Apply: open until filled (re-checked 5 November 2026)
What the power electronics engineer does
- Design, analyse and document new and existing power electronic products
- Simulate circuit breakers for different uses, and support thermal design with loss and efficiency estimates
- Choose components and work with suppliers to check technical feasibility
- Build and test simulation models and hardware prototypes, with hands-on testing and troubleshooting
- Analyse test results to improve designs, write technical reports, and work with control, test and layout teams
Why this role matters
Solid-state circuit breakers use power semiconductors to cut a fault in microseconds, far faster than mechanical breakers. They matter for DC systems such as data centres, batteries and solar. ABB’s Smart Power Division supplies power systems to large data centre companies.
What ABB is looking for
- MS in Electrical or Electronic Engineering
- Strong knowledge of power conversion topologies, and of power semiconductor modules and discrete devices
- Thermal and electrical simulation tools such as Ansys Maxwell or Icepak, SIMetrix, PLECS, MATLAB/Simulink and LTspice
- Experience designing, building and testing prototype converters or solid-state breakers, with care for insulation, signal integrity and EMC
- PCB design software such as Altium Designer, and lab instruments: oscilloscopes, spectrum, network and impedance analysers
- MATLAB, Python (NumPy) or similar tools, and experience in low-voltage power conversion and DC applications
- Good communication in English
Nice to have
- Experience developing solid-state circuit breakers (SSCBs)
Pay and location
The posting does not state pay or years of experience. It is an on-site role in Hyderabad. ABB says it never asks job applicants for payment.
How to apply
Apply through the official ABB job posting. ABB’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 5 November 2026. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application
- Prepare one converter or breaker prototype you built: the topology, the devices, the losses you measured and what failed
- Revise SiC and GaN switches against silicon IGBTs, and how each affects conduction and switching loss
- Be ready to explain how a solid-state breaker detects and clears a fault, and how you absorb the energy safely
- Review thermal design: junction-to-ambient resistance, heat-sink sizing and how you checked a loss estimate
- Bring a PCB layout you designed and explain your choices for creepage, clearance and EMC
