Job Description
IIT Roorkee’s International Centre of Excellence for Dams (ICED) is hiring two Research Associates for numerical modelling of dams, on a Central Water Commission (CWC) project led by Prof. M.L. Sharma. One post focuses on concrete gravity dams, power houses and intake structures; the other on embankment dams and the soil and rock beneath them.

India has thousands of large dams, many of them decades old, and keeping them safe depends on regular assessment. Numerical models let engineers check how a dam, its foundation and the reservoir behave under earthquakes, ageing and other loads, and help decide where repairs or monitoring are needed.
About the two research associate posts
- Post 1 (structural): numerical modelling of gravity dams, power houses and intake structures; automating data extraction and post-processing with Python; detailed technical reports, design validations and field visits
- Post 2 (geotechnical): numerical modelling of soil and rock masses for embankment dam stability; deconvolution of ground motions; geotechnical investigations and stability analysis of dams; reports and field visits
Eligibility
- Post 1: M.Tech in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or Dam Safety and Rehabilitation (or equivalent), or a Ph.D. in a relevant field, preferably from NITs, IITs, IISc or higher institutes. Desirable: Abaqus, Ansys or LS-Dyna; Python scripting; modelling dam-reservoir-foundation interaction and alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR); user-defined subroutines
- Post 2: M.Tech in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Dam Safety and Rehabilitation (or equivalent), or a Ph.D. in a relevant field, preferably from NITs, IITs, IISc or higher institutes. Desirable: Plaxis 2D/3D, GeoStudio, RS2; Python post-processing; deconvolution of ground motions; constitutive models such as PM4Sand, UBC Sand and HSS
All candidates must have excellent academic performance and must be GATE qualified; the notice says essential qualifications may be relaxed in exceptional cases. Open to Indian nationals only. Among equally qualified candidates, SC/ST candidates will be preferred. No TA/DA is paid for attending the interview.

How to prepare for this application
- Dam-reservoir interaction: revise how reservoir water is represented in seismic analysis of concrete dams, and the role of foundation flexibility.
- Seismic inputs: response spectra, the Indian seismic code for structures, and what ground-motion deconvolution does in site response.
- Material behaviour: for Post 1, what alkali-aggregate reaction does to concrete; for Post 2, what liquefaction-capable soil models like PM4Sand capture.
- Automation: bring an example of a Python script that pulled results from Abaqus, Ansys or Plaxis.
- Documents: have your GATE scorecard ready; it is required.
