Job Description
IIT Indore is hiring two Research Associates to turn steel-making slag into high-value concrete for strategic construction, on the CoVER project sponsored by the Steel Research & Technology Mission of India (SRTMI). The same notice also advertises one Technical Assistant post.
At a glance
- Positions: Research Associate (2 posts); the notice also advertises 1 Technical Assistant post
- Project: High-value Concrete Visor by EAF slag Recycling (CoVER) for strategic applications
- Sponsor: Steel Research & Technology Mission of India (SRTMI)
- Pay: Rs 58,000 per month (consolidated) plus HRA as per the funding agency
- Duration: One year initially, extendable up to the project duration based on performance
- Apply by: 18 September 2026, via Google Form
Electric arc furnace (EAF) slag is a by-product of steel-making, produced in large quantities, and much of it is dumped. Using it as a raw material in concrete could cut waste and emissions, but its chemistry varies from batch to batch, so it needs fast characterisation and careful process design before it can be trusted in demanding structures.
About the research associate role
- Propose high-value uses of steel slag as a raw material for strategic construction applications
- Help develop a dynamic utilisation framework that accounts for variation in chemical and mineral composition
- Work on characterisation-based fast assessment, machine learning for process optimisation, decarbonising for preconditioning, and a multi-objective utilisation outline
Selected RA candidates who hold only a Master’s degree may be considered for admission to the Ph.D. programme as regular full-time scholars at IIT Indore, per institute norms.
Eligibility
- Ph.D. or equivalent in Civil, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Materials or Chemical Engineering or Chemistry; or
- 3 years of research, teaching, and design and development experience after an M.E./M.Tech/M.S. in those fields, with at least one paper in an SCI-indexed journal
- Desirable: good knowledge of slag recycling or concrete technology, experience in the steel industry, and NET/GATE qualification in a relevant area
Incomplete applications will be rejected. Only shortlisted candidates will be told by email about the in-person interview, and no TA/DA is paid.
Pay and duration
- Rs 58,000 per month (consolidated) plus HRA as per the funding agency
- One year initially, extendable up to the project duration based on performance
How to apply
Submit a detailed CV through the project Google Form only. Your CV should include your academic grades or percentages from Class X onwards with years and institutions, your GATE score with year, discipline, marks, All India Rank and number of candidates, your contact details and email, and details of project-relevant work experience.
Key dates
- Applications close: 18 September 2026
- In-person interview: shortlisted candidates will be told by email

How to prepare for this application
- Slag chemistry: revise the main phases in EAF slag and why free lime and expansion are concerns.
- Concrete technology: aggregate replacement, durability tests and mix design.
- Fast characterisation: XRF, XRD and how you would screen variable slag batches quickly.
- Machine learning: think about how you would predict concrete performance from slag composition.
- Industry links: any steel plant or construction experience is worth highlighting.
