Job Description
Form Energy is hiring a Battery Management System (BMS) Controls Engineer in its Controls and Systems Modelling team to develop dynamic battery models and control and state-estimation algorithms for its iron-air grid batteries. The work covers state machines, reduced-order models, estimation algorithms and code generation in MATLAB/Simulink, and the control architecture will scale across product generations.
At a glance
- Team: Controls and Systems Modelling
- Location: Berkeley, California (limited travel)
- Pay: $128,662 – $168,844 a year, as listed
- Apply: open until filled (re-checked 14 October 2026)
What you would do
- Implement and validate models in MATLAB/Simulink using model-based design
- Own architecture, implementation and code generation of battery control algorithms
- Lead system identification experiments with electrochemistry teams
- Define performance requirements and hardware interfaces for BMS algorithms, and integrate them into a system digital twin
Why this role matters
A battery’s control software decides how safely and efficiently it runs, and a new chemistry like iron-air needs estimation and control methods designed for it. This role shapes an architecture that will be used across several product generations, which is unusual scope for a controls engineer.
What Form Energy is looking for
- 3+ years in controls engineering, or an advanced degree with relevant research
- Experience with equivalent-circuit or electrochemical battery models and SOC/SOH/SOE estimation
- Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and Python
- Strong background in dynamical systems
Nice to have
- Experience with embedded code generation
Pay and location
Form Energy lists $128,662 to $168,844 a year for this role; relocation help is available.
How to apply

- System identification: experiments you designed to fit models.
- Research route: an advanced degree with relevant research counts.
About Form Energy
Form Energy develops iron-air batteries that can store electricity for several days at low cost, to keep grids reliable as more renewable power is added. It has utility contracts across the US and began high-volume production at its factory in Weirton, West Virginia; its R&D is in Somerville, Massachusetts and Berkeley, California.
