The work
You would join the Molecular Engineering team in Arc’s Genome Engineering Technology Center, supporting the routine execution of arrayed and pooled genetic perturbation screens in disease-relevant microglia derived from human pluripotent stem cells.
The core workflows are stem cell culture, differentiation to microglia, and viral transduction, plus a range of downstream screening and validation work. That gives broad exposure to the end-to-end pipelines behind Arc’s Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative, a cross-functional effort to find and develop drugs against rational therapeutic targets in neurodegeneration.
Microglia are a good reason to care about this post. They are central to how the brain handles damage, and getting them from stem cells reliably enough to screen in is genuinely hard.
What you need
- Strong hands-on cell culture, particularly with human pluripotent stem cells
- Experience with viral transduction and with genetic perturbation screening
- Careful documentation and the discipline to repeat a protocol to the same standard every week
- Read the official advertisement for the full list of requirements
About the employer
Arc Institute is an independent nonprofit research organisation working at the interface of artificial intelligence and biology. It was founded in 2021, is based in Palo Alto, and partners with Stanford University, UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco. Its own pitch is that its scientists get long-term funding and industry-scale resources while staying free to chase high-risk, long-horizon questions.
How to apply
Apply through the Arc Institute job page. No closing date is given, so apply early. Check the visa position before you start. US research employers differ on whether they sponsor, and some adverts say outright that they will not.

How to prepare for this application
- Reliability is the job. Screening pipelines reward people who make the same protocol work every week.
- Show your stem cell hours. Say which lines you have grown and what you differentiated them into.
- It is a fixed-term contract. Check the term before you move for it.
- Check sponsorship before you invest time. It is the biggest single filter on US research applications from overseas.
