Read the official Arc Institute advertisement before you apply.

The work

You would be the institute’s dedicated producer of lentivirus, supplying high-quality, well-characterised viral preparations that power perturbation screening and cell engineering across Arc’s wet lab technology centres, including Genome Engineering, Cellular Models and Mammalian Disease Models.

That work feeds the large-scale screening behind Arc’s Virtual Cell Initiative and its Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative. The advert is clear about the character of the role: planning, consistency and throughput, running staggered production rounds ahead of demand and scaling cell culture to meet it.

This is a specialist production post. It is the sort of job that quietly decides whether a whole institute’s screening programme runs on time.

What you need

  • Strong mammalian cell culture and lentiviral production experience
  • The planning discipline to run production ahead of demand, at consistent quality and titre
  • Careful record keeping, and comfort with biosafety rules for viral work
  • Read the official advertisement for the full list of requirements

One thing to check first

The advertisement states that this role is not eligible for visa sponsorship, and that it is a fixed-term, 18-month position. If you are applying from outside the United States, that single line rules this one out before anything else.

About the employer

Arc Institute is an independent nonprofit research organisation working at the interface of artificial intelligence and biology. It was founded in 2021, is based in Palo Alto, and partners with Stanford University, UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco. Its own pitch is that its scientists get long-term funding and industry-scale resources while staying free to chase high-risk, long-horizon questions.

How to apply

Apply through the Arc Institute job page. No closing date is given, so apply early. Check the visa position before you start. US research employers differ on whether they sponsor, and some adverts say outright that they will not.

How to prepare for this application

  • Throughput and consistency are the stated priorities. Evidence of reliable large-batch production carries more weight here than novelty.
  • Bring titre numbers. Say what you produced, at what scale, and how often it hit spec.
  • Check sponsorship before you invest time. It is the biggest single filter on US research applications from overseas.
