Job Description

Form Energy’s Advanced Technology team is hiring a Senior Staff Materials Engineer or Scientist to lead slurry and dispersion development for next-generation iron-air electrodes. The role develops aqueous slurry formulations, characterises particle behaviour and finds process–property relationships with chemists, materials scientists and battery engineers. It needs 12+ years with a bachelor’s, 10+ with a master’s, or a Ph.D.

At a glance

  • Team: Discharge Cell R&D, Advanced Technology
  • Location: Somerville, Massachusetts
  • Pay: $170,246 – $212,813 a year, as listed
  • Apply: open until filled (re-checked 14 October 2026)

What you would do

  • Define approach, characterisation strategy and success criteria for new formulation problems
  • Formulate and optimise aqueous slurries of active materials and conductive carbons
  • Solve dispersion and stability problems in chemically active or corrosive liquids from first principles
  • Build a slurry characterisation toolkit and predictive models of particle behaviour
  • Act as the R&D organisation’s expert in particle and materials science

Why this role matters

How particles disperse in an electrode slurry decides how well the finished electrode performs and how easily it can be made at scale. It is a classic materials problem with direct impact on battery cost, and this senior role sets the approach for Form’s next-generation designs.

What Form Energy is looking for

  • A bachelor’s with 12+ years, a master’s with 10+ years, or a Ph.D. with relevant experience
  • Deep expertise in colloids, dispersions or particle science
  • Experience with slurry formulation and characterisation

Nice to have

  • Battery electrode or coatings experience

Pay and location

Form Energy lists $170,246 to $212,813 a year for this role; relocation help is available.

How to apply

Apply through the official Form Energy job posting. Form Energy’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 14 October 2026. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application

  • Colloid science: show dispersion problems you solved from first principles.
  • Characterisation: rheology, zeta potential or particle sizing experience helps.
  • Models: predictive models of particle behaviour are named.
  • Seniority: this is a subject-matter-expert role.

About Form Energy

Form Energy develops iron-air batteries that can store electricity for several days at low cost, to keep grids reliable as more renewable power is added. It has utility contracts across the US and began high-volume production at its factory in Weirton, West Virginia; its R&D is in Somerville, Massachusetts and Berkeley, California.
