Job Description
Uppsala University’s Department of Chemistry for Life Sciences is hiring a permanent associate professor in biochemistry, specialising in protein biochemistry. The post joins the Biochemistry programme at the Biomedical Centre (BMC), which studies the structure, function, dynamics, interactions, evolution and catalytic mechanisms of proteins. The department wants someone who strengthens its work in molecular recognition, protein structure and dynamics, enzyme mechanisms, protein engineering or interactomics, and who can open new directions; AI-supported protein analysis or design is valued.
At a glance
- Position: Associate professor (universitetslektor), permanent, full time
- Start: 1 August 2027 or by agreement
- Where: Department of Chemistry for Life Sciences, BMC, Uppsala
- Reference: UFV-PA 2026/1715
- Contact: Prof. Ylva Ivarsson, ylva.ivarsson@kemi.uu.se

About the protein biochemistry post
- Run independent, internationally competitive research in protein biochemistry and lead a group
- Work on topics such as interaction analysis, enzymology, protein design, directed evolution, biologics or biocatalysis
- Teach in English and Swedish at all levels, especially protein biochemistry, enzymology and biochemical methods
- Supervise degree projects and doctoral students and develop courses
- Take part in department committees and development
Teaching language
Uppsala expects its teachers to teach in Swedish and English over time. Applicants who cannot teach in Swedish at first get Swedish language training as part of their duties, and the university offers Swedish courses to new international staff. If the English and Swedish versions of the advert differ, the Swedish version applies.
What UU is looking for
- A PhD in biochemistry or a closely related field
- A strong publication record and a clear profile in experimental protein biochemistry
- University teaching expertise in biochemistry, and at least ten weeks of teacher training (or within two years)
- A documented ability to win external grants and to lead research, including supervising students and early-career researchers
- Documented ability to teach in Swedish or English
Nice to have
- Research that complements structural biology, biophysics, enzymology, protein engineering or computational molecular life science
- AI or machine-learning-supported protein analysis or design
- Interdisciplinary collaborations and science communication
- Administrative and management experience
Pay and location
Uppsala University sets salaries individually; the advert gives no figure. The post is permanent and full time in Uppsala; a probationary period may apply.
